Studio

With an established painting and ceramic practice, Heather spends time between both a home studio in Yarrow and an industrial studio in Vancouver. With the addition of a new son in the summer of 2022, working from her home studio has become invaluable to Heather’s practice. Located a little over 1 hr outside of Vancouver, Yarrow is the town Heather grew up in.

In 2022 Heather was able to be part of an artist residency program called PADA in Lisbon, Portugal. In the course of her month-long residency she created a series of paintings and ceramic tiles that were inspired by the post-industrial landscape of the residency site.

The Vancouver Studio

Located in one of Vancouver’s Artist studio hubs, the Mergatroid Building, Heather has had a studio in this building since 2007, when she first launched Dahlhaus Studio. As part of the Ceramic Collective, her studio shares a kiln room with 7 other ceramic artists. The Dahlhaus Studio has it’s own space, consisting of a pugmill, wheel, custom slipcasting moulds, glaze materials and finished work. Primarily a ceramic studio, Heather also stores finished paintings and meets with clients in this studio.

Early on in her practice, Heather recognized the need for mentorship opportunities for younger ceramic students in Vancouver. She began hiring a part-time assistant who works with her in the studio one day a week to help with packing and shipping, wedging clay, sieving glazes and loading kilns. The conversations around the work, and her practice as an artist has been invaluable to a long list of ceramic artists who spent anywhere from 3 months to 2 years assisting. Since 2018, Heather has also been an adjunct professor at Emily Carr University as a ceramic instructor. She is committed to teaching workshops and encouraging students as they pursue their own practices as artists.
